Login
You need a MSN .Net Passport for signing in to eBuddy for MSN. If you have a hotmail.com or msn.com account, you already have a Passport. If you do not have one yet, click here to register your free .Net Passport today
1. On the eBuddy homepage, choose MSN Classic . Then type your e-mail address and password in the login fields. Make sure you use your complete email address (good = iamcool@hotmail.com; bad = iamcool).
2. Select your initial status . If you want a secure login, then check the box.
3. Click login to sign in to eBuddy and start chatting.
Note : By signing in you accept our terms .
eBuddy does not store any passwords and therefore cannot give you your password back. If you forgot your password, click here to go to the MSN page for lost passwords. There you can retrieve or reset your password and start enjoying eBuddy.
Instant Messaging
You can start a conversation with a contact by sending an instant message.
1. In your MSN contact list, click on the name of the contact you want to talk to.
2. A conversation window will appear. Type your message in the box at the bottom and then click send .
3. To end the conversation, click close .
While you are instant messaging with one of your contacts, you can add another contact to the conversation.
1. In the conversation window, click on add .
2. Your other online contacts will appear. Select the contact by clicking on it and the contact will be added to the conversation.
You can use emoticons in messages to express yourself. There are two ways to insert an emoticon:
In the conversation window, click on the emoticon button to open the emoticon window. Select the emoticon you want to insert by clicking on it.
Or: Type the keyboard shortcut to insert the emoticon into your message.
You can change the appearance of your text by selecting another font, font colour, or text effect.
In the conversation window, click on the buttons above the message box to format your message:
1. To use another font than Arial, select another font from the dropdown list.
2. To change the colour of the text, click the font colour button. Select a colour from the palette by clicking on it.
3. To get text in Bold , Italic , Underline , or Strike Through, click on B , I , U or S .
Contacts Options
You can add contacts to your contact list if you know the email address of their .Net passport.
1. In the main window, click contacts .
2. Type the email address of the new contact in the add contact field and click add .
Note : If the email address does not end with @hotmail.com , then remove this.
3. Click contacts to go back to the main window.
You can alter your contact list by deleting, blocking and unblocking.
1. In the main window, click contacts .
To delete a contact: click delete behind the email address of the contact.
To block a contact: click block behind the email address of the contact.
To unblock a contact: click unblock behind the email address of the blocked contact.
Note: With deleting, the contact will be permanently removed from the contact list. He/she will still be able to see your status. With blocking, the contact will remain in the contact list, but he/she will no longer see your status. You can undo this by unblocking the contact.
2. Click contacts to go back to the main window.
You can change the way your contact list appears in the main window. You can choose whether contact groups are shown. Also you can select whether you want to see email addresses or only screen names of your contacts.
1. In the main window, click options .
2. To view groups in the contact list, select yes to enable it. To show emails of your contacts, select yes to enable it.
3. Click OK to save changes and to go back to the main window.
Configurations
By changing your status you inform your contacts about your current activity and whether you are available for conversations.
1. In the main window, your current status appears on the upper left corner.
2. To change your status , select another status from the list.
With appear offline , you will be seen as offline to your contacts and they cannot send a message to you. But you will be able to view the status of your contacts and send them messages.
With other statuses your contacts can send you a message and you will be alerted.
You can change the name that is shown to your contact, in two ways:
1. In the main window, click on your current screen name next to the display picture.
2. Change the screen name and press enter .
Or:
1. In the main window, click options .
2. Type your new screen name in the new nick field and click change .
3. Click OK to go back to the main window.
eBuddy lets you upload a display picture, that will be shown to your contacts. If your contacts have a display picture, then you will see it when you move your mouse over their screen name.
1. In the main window, click on the eBuddy display picture next to your screen name.
2. Click Browse to find a picture you want to upload.
Note: You can only upload .gif, .jpg or .png files that are smaller than 100 KB.
3. Click change to upload the picture and go back to the main window.Viewing Options
You can change the skin of all eBuddy windows from the default blue colour to white.
1. In the main window, click options .
2. To change the skin , select a colour from the list.
3. Click OK to save changes and to go back to the main window.
If you do not want people to know you are instant messaging, you can change the title of the eBuddy windows. Then if you minimize the window, the taskbar will not show that you are using eBuddy.
1. In the main window, click options .
2. In the window title field enter the title you want the taskbar to show and click change .
3. Click OK to save changes and to go back to the main window.
You can change the language in which eBuddy is shown. Currently the following languages are supported: English, Italian, Spanish, German, Dutch, French, Portuguese and Danish.
1. In the main window, click options .
2. To change the language , select another language from the list.
3. Click OK to save changes and to go back to the main window.You can change the time zone, so the time shown with messages is adapted to your location.

eBuddy can notify you when one of your contacts has signed in?
1. In the main window, click options .
2. To receive alert popups, select yes to enable it.

Note: If you turn on Popup Alerts, you will also be alerted when you receive a new email on your hotmail account.eBuddy can notify you when you received an instant message, either by sound and/or by putting the conversation window on the foreground.
1. In the main window, click options .
2. To play sounds , select yes to enable it. To focus window , select yes to enable it.
3. Click OK to save changes and to go back to the main window.E-mail Options
After you sign in, eBuddy will check how many new e-mail messages you received on your hotmail account.
1. In the main window, click mails (.) .
2. A new window opens to take you directly to your hotmail account.
Note: The number between the brackets (.) shows how many new e-mail messages you have.
eBuddy can notify you when you received a new email on my hotmail account.
1. In the main window, click options .
2. To receive Alerts Popups , select yes to enable it.
3. Click OK to save changes and to go back to the main window.
Note: If you turn on Popup Alerts, you will also be alerted when any of your contacts sign in to MSN.

You can start a conversation with a contact by sending an instant message.
1. In your MSN contact list, click on the name of the contact you want to talk to.
(or right-click on the contact's name and select send an instant message ).
2. A conversation window will appear. Type your message in the box at the bottom and then click send .
3. To end the conversation, click the x in the tab .While you are instant messaging with one of your contacts, you can add another contact to the conversation.
1. In the conversation window, click on i nvite .
2. Your other online contacts will appear. Select the contact you want to add and click ok .
To select more than one contact, hold down your Ctrl or Shift key while clicking.You can use emoticons in messages to express yourself. There are two ways to insert an emoticon:
In the conversation window, click on the emoticon button (next to font settings) to open the emoticon window. Select the emoticon you want to insert by clicking on it. Or type the keyboard shortcut to insert the emoticon into your message. All emoticons that are available in MSN 7.5 can be used with eBuddy. Unfortunately we do not support custom emoticons yet, so you cannot send or receive them from your buddies.
You can change the appearance of your text by selecting another font, font size, font style, font color or font effects. These settings will be used every time you log in to eBuddy from this computer.
1. In the conversation window, click font settings .
To use another font than Arial, select another font from the list.
To alter the font style , choose regular, bold , Italic , or Bold Italic .
To change the font size of the text, select another size from the list.
To change the font color button, select another color from the list.
To get font effects, check the box for Underline , or Strike Through .
2. Click ok to save the settings and go back to the conversation window.
In the conversation window, click on the nudge button (above the send button). The chat window of your contact will shake and play a buzz sound.
1. In the main window, click on the settings button.
(or select settings in the status dropdown menu)
2. Click on the notifications tab. Check the box to enable nudges .
4. Click ok to return to the main window.

Contact Options
You can add contacts to your contact list if you know the email address of their .Net passport.
1. In the main window, click +add a contact .
2. Type the email address of the new contact in the blank field and click ok .1. In the main window, click on the contact and hold the left mouse button down.
2. Drag the contact to the group and release the mouse button once the group is selected.
1. In the main window, right-click on a name of a group.
2. In the menu that appears, click on create group to add a new group.

3. Fill in the new group name and press enter .

3. Click ok to confirm you want to delete it.
You can alter your contact list by deleting, blocking and unblocking.
1. In the main window, right-click on the name of the contact.
2. In the menu that appears, click on block , unblock or delete contact .

To unblock a contact: click unblock behind the email address of the blocked contact.

1. In the main window, right-click on the name of the contact.
2. In the menu that appears, click on view profile to got to see this contact's profile.
eBuddy displays your contacts in the contact list by screen name. You can alter this and view contacts by email addresses.
1. In the main window, click on the settings button.
2. Click on the contacts tab and select a show contact by e-mail address .
To go back to, choose show contact by screen name.
3. Click OK to save changes and to go back to the main window.eBuddy sorts your contact list by online/offline status. You can alter this and sort your contact list by group. You can also have only online contacts sorted by group and have all offline contacts together. This can be done in two ways:
1. In the main window, click on the settings button.
2. Click on the contacts tab and select a sort contacts by groups .
(To go back to sorting by status, choose sort contacts by online/offline status )
3. Check the box to group offline contacts to only show online contacts in groups.
3. Click OK to save changes and to go back to the main window.
Or:
1. In the main window, right-click on a name of a group.
2. In the menu that appears, go to sort contacts by and select groups .
(To go back to sorting by status, choose online/offline )
3. To only sort online contacts in groups, right-click on a name of a group again.
4. In the menu that appears, go to sort contacts by and select group offline contacts together .
Configurations

eBuddy lets you upload a display picture, that will be shown to your contacts. This eBuddy display picture will be shown even when you are on another computer! If your contacts have a display picture, then you will see it when you move your mouse over their screen name.
1. In the main window, click on the eBuddy display picture next to your screen name.
(or click on the settings button)
2. Click browse to find a picture you want to upload. Select the file and click open.
Note: You can only upload .gif, .jpg or .png files that are smaller than 100 KB. If your display picture is not updated, then your picture is probably too big, try uploading a smaller picture. You can use this tool to resize your picture.
3. After the file has been uploaded, click on ok to go back to the main window.
Viewing Options
eBuddy offers tabbed chatting , where all conversations open in a separate tab. This way you have your contact list and conversations in one window.
You can change to chatting with windows and have conversations open in a separate window, so you can view multiple conversations at the same time.
1. In the main window, click on the settings button.
2. Click on the general tab.
3. Choose open conversation in a new window for chatting with windows .
To go back to tabbed chatting , choose open conversation in a new tab .
4. Click OK to save changes and to go back to the main window.
With tabbed chatting conversations are opened in separate tabs. To switch between multiple conversations: click on the tab with the display picture and name of the contact to go to the conversation with him/her.
With tabbed chatting conversations are opened in separate tabs. You can use the undock/dock function to move the conversation from tab to new window and back.
In the conversation window, click undock to open the conversation into a new window. To move the conversation back to a tab, click dock .

3. Click OK to save changes and to go back to the main window.

When you click on the signout button or when you close the window. This ensures you do not accidentally signout to eBuddy. You can disable this function if you want.

3. Check the boxes for when I close the window give me a warning and/or when I click sign out give me a warning .
4. Click OK to save changes and to go back to the main window.
E-mail Options

Instant Messaging

1. In your Yahoo contact list, double-click on the screen name of the contact you want to talk to.
(or click on the screen name of the contact to select it and then go to tools and click send im )
2. A conversation window will appear. Type your message in the box at the bottom and then click send .
3. To end the conversation, click close .
You can invite contacts to a conference, so you can chat with two or more contacts at the same time.
1. In the main window, go to tools and click on invite 2 Conference .
(Or in the conversation window while chatting with one contact, click on Invite )
2. A chat invitation window will appear. Click on contacts from your messenger list to add them to the invitation. Double-click on contacts in the Invitation List to remove them from the invitation.
3. If the contact you want to invite is not in your messenger list, then enter the Yahoo! ID of the contact in the Add another field and click add .
4. You can alter the invitation message in the messages field
5. Click on invite to send the invitation.
6. A conference window will appear with the contacts that accepted your invitation. Type your message in the box at the bottom and then click send.
7. To end the conference, click close.

While you are instant messaging with your contacts, you can join Yahoo! Chat Rooms without having to sign in on the Yahoo! homepage.
1. In the main window, go to tools and click on Yahoo! Chat .
2. A new window will open with Yahoo! Chat rooms, where you can select chat rooms you want to join to start chatting.
Contacts Options
You can add contacts to your contact list if you know the Yahoo! ID or their Yahoo! email address.
1. In the main window, go to tools and select add buddy .
2. In the contacts window, enter the Yahoo! ID (or Yahoo! Mail address without @Yahoo.com ) into the blank field.
3. Select the group to add the new contact in.
4. Click add this friend to add the new contact and go back to the main window.
If you want to add a contact and you do not know their Yahoo! ID, then you can search through the Yahoo! Member directory to find this person.
1. In the main window, go to help and select fnd a friend .
2. A new window will open with Yahoo! Member Directory , where you can search for contacts to add to your list.
You can alter your contact list by deleting contacts.
1. In the main window, select the contact you want to delete.
2. Go to tools and select delete buddy to remove the contact from your list.
You can alter your contact list by renaming groups.
1. In the main window, go to tools and select rename group .
2. In the contacts window, select the group you want to rename.
3. Enter the new name for the group in the blank field.
4. Click rename group to change the name and go back to the main window.
You can alter the way your contact list appears by letting eBuddy show online contacts only. There are two ways to do this:
In the main window, go to view and click on show only online friends . To show all contacts click on show offline friends .
Or: In the main window, go to view and select preferences. Select no for Show Offlines to see online friends only. To show all contacts, selects yes.
If you want to know more about certain contacts, you can view their profile.
1. In the main window, select a contact by clicking on the Yahoo! ID.
2. Go to view and click on view profile .
3. A new window will open with Yahoo! Member Directory, where the profile of the contact you selected will be displayed.
While you are instant messaging, you can view public files in the Yahoo! Briefcase of your contacts.
1. In the main window, select a contact by clicking on the Yahoo! ID.
2. Go to v iew and click on view files .
3. A new window will open with Yahoo! Briefcase, where you can look at shared files from this contact.
Configurations

Or: Choose custom and enter a new status message and click ok . To show the Busy icon click ok again.

If you do not want people to know you are instant messaging, you can change the title of the eBuddy windows. Then if you minimize the window, the taskbar will not show that you are using eBuddy.
1. In the main window, go to view and select preferences.
2. In the window title field enter the title you want the taskbar to show.
3. Click save to save changes and to go back to the main window.
Alert Options
eBuddy can notify about contacts going online or offline. In addition eBuddy can alert you when you receive a message. You can choose the way you want to be notified about changes.
1. In the main window, go to view and select preferences .
2. Select the alert & sound tab
3. Choose yes to enable one or more of the following notifications options:
Sounds : a sound will play to notify you about changes.
Flashing Window Title: the eBuddy window will flash in the Taskbar to notify you about changes.
Focus Window: the eBuddy window will move to the front to notify you about changes.
4. To receive popup notification, select the General tab and choose yes for show popups .
5. Click save to save changes and to go back to the main window.
Login
You need an AIM Screen Name for signing in to eBuddy for AOL. If you use AOL, AIM, Compuserve, Netscape , you already have a Screen Name. If you do not have one yet, click here to get a free AIM Screen Name today!
1. On the eBuddy homepage, choose AIM . Then type your Screen Name and password in the login fields.
Make sure you use your AIM Screen name only and not your complete email address (good = iamcool; bad = iamcool@aol.com).

Instant Messaging
You can start a conversation with a contact by sending an instant message.
1. In your AIM contact list, click on the screen name of the contact you want to talk to.
2. A conversation window will appear. Type your message in the box at the bottom and then click send .
3. To end the conversation, click close .

1. In the main window, click on invite behind the screen name one of the contacts you want to chat with.
(Or in the conversation window while messaging with one contact, click on invite ).

3. You can alter the message in the i nvitation message field.
4. Click on send to send the invitation to the contacts you have selected.
5. A chat room window will appear with the contacts that accepted your invitation. Type your message in the box at the bottom and then click send.
6. To leave the chat room, click leave room and the window will be closed .

You can add contacts to your contact list, if you know their Screen Name. If you know their AOL, Netscape or Compuserve email address, the Screen Name is the email address without @aol.com, @netscape.net and @compuserve.com)
1. In the main window, click on setup .
2. In the setup window, click on add buddy
3. Enter the screen name of the contact into the blank field.
4. Select the group to add the new contact in.
5. Click add to add the new contact and go back to the main window.

If you want to know more about your contacts, you can look at their profile. You can also get information about the warning level and the online time of this contact. In the main window, click on info behind the contact you want to know more about.
If contacts have set their status to away, then you can look at their away message to see why they are away.
In the main window, click on info behind the contact that is away.
Configurations

1. In the main window, click on away .
2. A prompt window will appear. Enter an away message in the blank field to let your contacts know why you are away and click OK . If you do not want to send away messages, then click cancel .
3. To let your contacts know you are back, click back in the main window.
If you encounter problems with eBuddy, please try these steps to solve your problem.
General
On old computers eBuddy will be a bit slow. You can try to make eBuddy faster by closing other programs you do not need at the moment. If you are browsing the Internet make sure you do not have too many browser windows open at one time.
On slow connections eBuddy will need some time to start up. You can make this faster by pausing any downloads you have currently in progress. Please wait for the complete load of the eBuddy window.
Download this patch to disable the clicks you hear each time the window refreshes during the conversation. The patch will add some information to your registry.
Note: With MSN New you will not have this problem.
Popup Blockers
For eBuddy to function properly, the popup blocker needs to be turned off. Otherwise the conversation window will not appear when a contact has initiated a conversation with you. Then only you can invite contacts to a conversation.
Note: With the MSN New version, eBuddy detects your popup blocker and automatically switches to the tabbed chatting without popups. So you will not experience this problem and will not lose any message!
Here we will explain how to do this for the most popular toolbars. If you use other popup blockers, then you will need to check the settings of the program.
Note: Since eBuddy uses multiple servers you may need to do this for each server separately, unless your popup blocker program allows you to disable it for all eBuddy.com sub domains.
If you use the Google toolbar, then click on the Pop-ups blocked button to disable the popup blocker.

If you use the Alexa toolbar, then click on the Popup button to turn off the popup blocker.

If you use the MSN toolbar, then click on the Pop-ups Blocked button to deactivate the popup blocker.

If you use the Yahoo toolbar, then click on the Pop-up blocker button and make sure Enable Pop-Up Blocker is NOT checked.

If you use the popup blocker included in Windows XP Service Pack 2, then click on the Information Bar for Pop-ups in Internet Explorer. Then choose Always Allow Pop-ups from This Site to allow pop-ups from eBuddy (or choose Turn Off Pop-up Blocker to disable the Popup-blocker).

If you do not see the Information Bar in Internet Explorer, click on Tools in the status bar. Then click on Pop-up Blocker and choose Turn-Off Pop-up Blocker .

Using Internet Explorer
At eBuddy we continuously improve our application. In order to use the newest version, you may need to delete your cache files belonging to older versions.
1. In Internet Explorer, go to the Tools menu of the status bar and select Internet Options .
2. In the General tab of the menu, click Delete Files .
3. In the window that pops up, click OK to delete the cache files.
4. Then close Internet Options by clicking OK


You have to enable JavaScript, because the eBuddy application uses JavaScript.
1. In Internet Explorer, go to the Tools menu of the status bar and select Internet Options .
2. In the Security tab of the menu, choose Internet as a Web content zone. Click on the Custom Level� button.
3. Scroll down to the Scripting settings and check whether the following settings are enabled: Active scripting, Allow paste operations via script, and Scripting of Java applets
4. Click OK to return to the Security tab.
5. Then close Internet Options by clicking OK.


You have set the privacy settings to at least a level that allows cookies to your computer. This is necessary because eBuddy uses cookies to load the conversations and to save your personal settings.
1. In Internet Explorer, go to the Tools menu of the status bar and select Internet Options .
2. In the tab Privacy tab of the menu, select a medium level for your privacy settings for the internet.
3. Then close Internet Options by clicking OK

Using Mozilla Firefox
At eBuddy we continuously improve our application. In order to use the newest version, you may need to delete your cache files belonging to older versions.
1. In Mozilla Firefox, go to the Tools menu in the status bar and choose Clear Private .
2. Deselect all options, but select the option Cache .
3. Click Clear Private Data Now


Using other browsers
At eBuddy we continuously improve our application. In order to use the newest version, you may need to delete your cache files belonging to older versions.
If you do not know how to do this with your browser, search in the Help of your browser for empty cache.
Hint: Usually this is listed under privacy settings.
